TOOTH DECAYDental plaque is the major contributory factor of tooth decay and gum disease: PLAQUE + SUGAR = ACIDACID + TIME = TOOTH DECAY |

GUM DISEASEGum disease is the greatest cause of tooth loss in adults: PLAQUE + TIME = GUM DISEASEPlaque has been allowed to build-up between the tooth and gum where it causes inflammation. The gum becomes red and swollen and often bleeds on brushing. This condition is called GINGIVITIS. If the plaque is still not removed the inflammation will continue and the plaque will harden to form calculus - this will grow and gradually destroy the supporting structures of the teeth. This condition is called PERIODONTITIS. If this condition is allowed to continue even more of the supporting structures including the bone will be destroyed resulting in eventual tooth loss.

PIT & FISSURE SEALANTWhy do teeth need a pit and fissure sealant? The occlusal (chewing) surfaces of all molar and premolar teeth are covered with pits and fissures which extend right down into the tooth. However well or often your children brush their teeth these pits and fissures are impossible to clean thoroughly. Food particles and bacteria stick in them and will eventually cause decay. Although fluoride treatment helps protect the smooth surfaces of the teeth, it cannot protect the 'high risk' areas where over 80% of decay in children's teeth occur. | |

REMOVING PLAQUEEffective and regular brushing with a professionally recommended toothbrush removes plaque. Point the filaments of the brush towards the gum at an angle of 45º. Use several short, back-and-forth strokes in small circular and vibrating movements to loosen the PLAQUE from between the teeth and from the small gap where the teeth and gum join. Use several longer, sweeping strokes to carry the PLAQUE away from the gum line towards the biting and chewing surfaces of the teeth. Finish off by giving the chewing surfaces a thorough brushing. Use this method right around the mouth, concentrating on one or two teeth at a time. Brush your teeth as often as possible, at least twice a day.

DENTAL FLOSSDental floss is the most effective way to keep the critical area free from PLAQUE and should be used as follows: Prepare a length of floss, about 18 inches long. Slip the floss between teeth and form a 'C' shape. GENTLY guide the floss into the small natural space between tooth and gum, with a GENTLE sawing action scrape the side of the tooth. Repeat for adjacent tooth. Floss in the gaps between all your teeth.
